Saturday’s referendum may have been the first held in nearly a quarter of a century, but it did not mean voters missed out on what for many is the highlight of their civic duty.

Students and parents at Dunsborough Primary School fired up the hotplate on the weekend to hold a fundraiser targeted at those casting their ballots.

Voters were treated to a selection of donated baked goods along with the ever-popular sausage sizzle.

Parent Anneliese Hvalgaard Williams noted it was a long day for everybody involved, with the stall still running in the late afternoon.

“We have had volunteers here all day from 7am,” she said.

Those wanting a prized democracy sausage paid $5 for the honour.

In a sign of the times, voters were even able to pay for their purchases by card.

Fundraising efforts were helped along by a contingent of young sport stars playing on the school oval during the day.

“It was good in the morning because the under 12s were playing cricket, so it was a nice community feel,” Ms Hvalgaard Williams said.

It was the first time a sausage sizzle and cake stall had been organised at the school on voting day.

The funds raised from Saturday will be put towards a Year 6 camp for Dunsborough Primary School students to Perth next year.

Ms Hvalgaard Williams said she was grateful for all of the support the stall had received from the community.
