Cobie takes a big cut to help Variety

Cobie Yates is taking fundraising into her own hands by sacrificing 35cm of her coveted long hair to make a wig for kids with cancer.

The St Mary MacKillop College Year 1 student is a regular Rapunzel with hair more than 40cm long.

She said she was was inspired to raise funds for cancer patients after her grandfather died of the disease two years ago.

Cobie, 6, has already raised about $1500, with Westpac doubling the amount she raises for Variety — the children’s charity.

The very public haircut will be conducted in front of her classmates at school next Friday and cut by Cinco Hair Boutique.

Cobie said she was excited to get her hair cut off because “Daddy doesn’t want to brush it” and sick kids needed hair more than her.

“When they have their medication their hair falls out so I thought I could give them some of mine,” she said.

“I want to raise $2000.”

Cobie’s mother Jen Yates said she was very proud of her daughter.

“Variety specifically use the hair to make children’s wigs and Cobie thought that it would be nice to donate it to a child suffering from such a tough illness,” she said.
