Busselton’s newest drawcard has celebrated its first birthday and more than 400,000 visitors.

Origins Market had “struck a chord” with residents as well as visitors, general manager and former Margaret River-Busselton Tourism Association chief executive Pip Close said.

“Connecting people directly with quality WA produce is a guiding principle for Origins Market, closing the gap between producer and consumer is at the heart of what we do,” she said.

“Within our walls, in the heart of Busselton, are more than 80 makers, growers and producers of quality WA goods.”

Since set up, the market has added a significant component to Busselton’s tourism offering while also helping residents access fresh produce and give smaller local businesses a profile boost.

“The last year, which of course was also our first, has been an extremely challenging environment for business in Australia,” Ms Close said.

“We have had to move quickly, reacting to economic, social and community health demands whilst supporting and incubating many small and micro-businesses that have placed their trust in the vision of Origins Market through these same challenges.

“Sustainability is a guide for us, it is no buzz word,” she said.

“It means we look to the future, and with that lens we are able to make decisions for the long-term.”

To celebrate the anniversary and pay respects to its Wadandi-inspired design, Origins Market will host several events next week.

On Thursday, November 3, the region’s Undalup Association will lead Walking on Boodja with Waalitj.

Ms Close said the event was a chance to learn more about Wadandi culture and connection to country with cultural custodian Zacc Webb leading a walk through the adjacent Wonnerup wetlands.

Across the November 5-6 weekend, several more workshops will focus on food and coffee, with activities for children and families including 100 free cupcakes on offer for the first youngsters through the door after 9.30am.
