Busselton Swimming Club’s juniors stand out with medal-winning performances at WA State Junior Championships

Junior swimmers for the Busselton Swimming Club have shown they are among the best in the state at the WA Junior State Championship. Young competitors Melina Dimitriadou-Peirce, 12, Ivy Hoang, 10, and Aidan Fisher, 9, headed to Perth at the weekend to face off against swimmers from across the State after qualifying to race. Melina made her mark in the 200m butterfly, taking a remarkable 11.43 seconds off her personal best time to win her first State gold medal. She also tackled a number of other difficult races at the championship, winning a bronze medal in the 400m individual medley, 800m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Ivy claimed a silver medal in the 50m and 200m breaststroke events, with Aidan excelling to receive silver in the 100m and 200m freestyle alongside bronze in the 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke. Head coach Andrew Sexton said more than 420 swimmers from 45 clubs across the State competed at the championships, noting the impressive 10-medal tally for the club’s three competitors. “To see the smiles of happiness on our youngest swimmers when they achieve their goals is extremely gratifying, especially after they have been so dedicated in training,” he said. “Our club members have achieved very well at their recent school carnivals and Inter-school events, and now these three swimmers have represented our club at the State level so successfully. “I am sure they will inspire other club members to try their best and enjoy the experience of achieving personal bests in future seasons.”
