Busselton tennis club member Wendy Weir will lead a team of WA tennis players as flag-bearer at the opening ceremony of the Australian Seniors Championships in Hobart.

In her tennis career that started when she was 26, Weir has won three Australian team gold medals, and 29 WA State seniors titles.

Weir was recently inducted into the WA Seniors Tennis Hall of Fame at a grand ceremony in Perth.

“There will be about 30 teams from WA heading to Hobart for the competition,” she said.

The over 80s team will be captained by Weir, who explained that the seniors teams are aged from 35 years old.

“There are three of us who are in their 80s, I am the baby of this team,” Weir said.

A cohort of 14 tennis players from Busselton and Dunsborough tennis clubs will be representing WA in the competition that will run from January 15-26.

In the first week of the competition the games are focused on teams, and players will be taking part in two, six-set matches every day.

During the second week of the championship, the games are singles, doubles and mixed.

The Australian Seniors Championships are held annually. Busselton Tennis Club hosted the competition in 2020 when about 800 competitors from across Australia took part.
