Arts Margaret River has been busy lining up a packed program of events
The team at Arts Margaret River have been busy lining up a packed program of events for the next few months.
Throughout the summer the team will be hosting five large-scale free concerts called Sunday Sundowners, the first of which will be on January 28 at 3.30pm at the Margaret River Heart building (Nala Bardip Mia).
The Sunday Sundowners are a series of free outdoor concerts held in Margaret River, Cowaramup and Augusta each year between January and March.
These concerts are supported by Arts Margaret River, the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River, Lotterywest, the Margaret River Lions, and local businesses.
Community groups run fundraising stalls, and the events have become very popular, with average attendances of about 600 people per concert
In addition to the Summer Sundowner concerts, the team also hosts Young@HEART, a regular Monday concert series at the Heart building.
Starting at 10am every Monday, the Young@Heart events are curated by Margaret River resident Ross Goulden.
Morning tea is available.
Arts Margaret River marketing manager Christopher Young is enthusiastic about the Young@Heart events.
“These concerts are so much more than just music — it’s like a hub for the whole community,” he said
Arts Margaret River will mark its 50th anniversary with a series of celebrations in July, including the publication of a history book by Heather Locke OAM.
Arts Margaret River is a not-for-profit organisation with six full-time employees, and a team of about 100 regular volunteers.
Mr Young said over a 12-month period, 129 Arts Margaret River volunteers contributed around 3300 hours of their time.
“Volunteers are central to our success, they are much loved and hugely valued,” he said.
The Margaret River Heart building, which the team took over in early 2023, is the base for many of Arts Margaret River’s projects.
The building was dual-named Nala Bardip Mia (Our Story House) by the Undalup Association last March.
Staff from the Arts Margaret River front-of-house team have settled into a new co-management model, working with shire technical staff.
The back-of-house function consists of Shire employees, and is managed by Phil Bebb, whose team facilitates all the technical aspects of events held in and around the building.
