Cat Haven buckles under pressure after being forced to take in 31 cats from one owner in a single day

WA’s peak cat welfare organisation is buckling under pressure after being forced to take in more than 30 cats from one owner in a single day. Cat Haven chief executive Roz Robinson told The West a man dropped off 31 cats at the centre at 11.30am on Tuesday. Ms Robinson said multiple cats had been placed in a single crate, with some cats sitting in their own urine and faeces. “It was quite confronting,” she said. Cat Haven is WA’s only open-admission cat shelter. Ms Robinson said the Shenton Park-based organisation had reached its 228-cat capacity and urged owners to desex their cats. “Cat welfare in WA is a community responsibility that must be taken seriously,” she said. “For decades, we have worked tirelessly to address the issues around stray and abandoned cats, but we can’t do it alone. “Cats are prolific breeders, with females able to reproduce as young as four months. “We need the public to sterilise their cats and financial support for those who can’t afford it. “Our intake hit a six-year high last year, with over 8,000 cats and kittens, and funds meant for essential improvements and care are being stretched thin just to keep up with intake. “Your support, whether through fostering, adopting, or donating can make a vital difference.”
