Surf sisters Mikaela and Eliza Greene make waves on House Rules

They’re the self-proclaimed renovation rookies who have never picked up a paint brush.

Yet in the first challenge of this year’s House Rules, Yallingup surfing sisters Mikaela and Eliza Greene blew judges away with their renovated warehouse bedroom, which was transformed in just three days.

Awarded the highest score by judges Jamie Durie, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Wendy Moore thanks to their unique 3-D feature wall, stylish furnishing and industrial-style open wardrobe, the sisters were gobsmacked that they took out the show’s first renovation challenge.

“I was blown away,” Mikaela told AAA. “I felt like Eliza and I came into this competition wanting to learn with the understanding that the other teams had extensive experience. We weren’t going in with the expectation to take out the first challenge at all, we were looking at practising so we don’t ruin somebody’s home.”

“I had to hear it one or two times to make sure it wasn’t a joke,” Eliza laughed. “We couldn’t believe it.”

But do they feel the pressure to keep the momentum of their first win going?

“I don’t think we had any pressure on ourselves,” Mikaela said.

“If anything, it gave us the confidence to know that we should be there and that we’re not just two ditzy girls who have no idea what we’re doing, but we’re fast learners.”

The girls credit their time in the professional surfing scene for preparing them to “lose graciously and win humbly”.

“I feel like being competitive surfers, you’re in a sport where you lose more than you win,” Mikaela said.

“That’s probably one of the best things that we’ve had going for us — we know what it’s like to be in a competition.”

Despite being seasoned renovators, Adelaide couple Lisa and Andy received the lowest score for their lacklustre dining room transformation, which puts them at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Dance teachers Pete and Courtney are the first team to have their home — an expansive 80s brown-brick mansion — renovated in today’s episode, which airs at 7.30pm on Seven/GWN7.
