Netflix series Territory, AKA ‘Succession in the Outback’ becomes a TV hit with international audiences
It’s been described as “Succession in the Outback” and “Dynasty with Dingoes”, but it looks as though Netflix can also add “Bona Fide Streaming Hit” to its description for new drama Territory.
The neo-western Aussie TV series, which was filmed in the Northern Territory and South Australia last year, has been viewed 6.4million times since Thursday, becoming the third most-watched series in the streamer’s global “Top 10 English TV Shows” list.
Produced by Easy Tiger and Ronde, the series stars Anna Torv, Michael Dorman, Robert Taylor and WA’s Clarence Ryan.
It has proved a success not just in Australia but around the world, where it has reached the weekly top 10 in 73 countries and number one in eight countries including Brazil and New Zealand.
Territory joins an small list of Aussie dramas that have cracked the elusive international market to land in Top 10 lists, joining Heartbreak High S2, which debuted at number seven and Boy Swallows Universe, which peaked at number three on the global top 10 English TV list.
Other Australian productions to have cracked the list include Surviving Summer Seasons one and two, Love is in the Air, Fisk, Run Rabbit Run, Wellmania, True Spirit and The Stranger.
There is still no word on whether Territory will be renewed for a second series, but PerthNow understands the American streaming giant is “keeping an eye on it” to see how it performs internationally.
