Landman, Dune Prophecy, Cruel Intentions: Some of the year’s biggest TV shows are dropping this week
Year’s end is traditionally TV’s dumping ground — but not anymore.

Dune Prophecy
Launching today on Binge
Those who fell in love with the Dune stories through Denis Villeneuve’s celebrated films will want to check out this much-anticipated prequel series. It has a similar look and feel, though this is set some 10,000 years before the events of the movies, focusing on the origins of the mysterious all-female Bene Gesserit sect.
Interior Chinatown

Taika Waititi is behind this strange new series, which stars Jimmy O. Yang and Aussie comedian Ronny Chieng as two waiters, Willis and Fatty. Surveilled
Wednesday, streaming on Binge
OK, so it is technically a doco, but there will be stacks of chat about with this new HBO film, which sees Pulitzer Prize-winning journo Ronan Farrow investigating the growing business of commercial spyware, “following the story from New York City to Tel Aviv, Israel, a centre of espionage cybertechnology”. Prescient, given the events of the past few weeks.
A Man On The Inside
Thursday, streaming on Netflix
From the creator of The Good Place, Parks And Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine comes this new series, starring Ted Danson as a retired man who gets a new lease on life after he becomes a mole in a secret investigation. This is based on the doco The Mole Agent, which was nominated for best documentary feature at the 2021 Oscars. Expect to hear lots more about this.
Cruel Intentions

Sound familiar? That’s because it is: this new series is based on the cult classic 1990s flick of the same name, which starred Reece Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe. It’s been rebooted for a modern audience, with the action taking place in an exclusive university in Washington DC, ready for a whole new generation of fans.

This black comedy, starring Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as crime podcasters Ava and Nathan, flew under the radar but was actually one of the best shows of last year. Season two picks up the story with Ava and Nathan as new parents desperately trying to move on from their true crime obsession — ha! As IF that’s going to be possible! Seek this one out.

The eight-episode second instalment of this long-running drama’s seventh season hits screens this week, picking up the story with Claire (Catriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Young Ian (John Bell) leaving the colonies for Scotland.
