Join the Great Greengrocer movement ... fresh is best

Freshness is at the forefront of a new campaign celebrating independent greengrocers.

The Great Greengrocer campaign has been jointly developed by the WA Government Perth Market Authority and the Chamber of Fruit and Vegetables Industries WA.

It encourages customers to support local greengrocers and lap up their knowledge about handling, storing, preparing and cooking fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables.

BG’s Fruit and Vegie Mart has been on Strelly Street in Busselton for more than 20 years.

Owner Wayne Howell sources much of his produce from Margaret River, Nannup, Donnybrook and Capel.

Mr Howell said many customers preferred to shop with them instead of the major supermarkets.

“The fact we can get more local produce, the service and, at the end of the day, I don’t think price is a big difference,” he said.

Mr Howell said an increase in television cooking shows and the popularity of food processors had brought attention back to fresh produce.
